Help protect your family, friends and neighbours

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) here in Gretton will, by using regular communication, be more than a crime prevention organisation. It aims to be a community group eventually formed in each road, street and throughout the community working together with existing village volunteer groups whist expanding the NHW message.

Our main aim is to help prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime including the raising of awareness about scams and scamming methods, improve safety including road and fire safety, and encourage neighbourliness with a supportive spirit across our community. These mean whilst helping to combat criminal activity remains a core aim, we aim to also assist in other important ways to help protect our community, such as supporting the elderly and vulnerable.

Promote good citizenship

We’ll help to promote good citizenship and greater public awareness through NHW; increase public participation in the prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour; reduce the fear of crime; improve police, fire service and community liaison with the aim of increasing public and community safety.

We will endeavour to communicate alerts including crime, fire prevention and safety information with suggestions that are as up to date as possible. Methods used will include the Gretton NHW members’ group, Facebook : Gretton Neighbourhood Watch, and occasionally other Facebook pages such as Gretton News & Views. Information will also be circulated via village groups, the Gretton Life magazine, village fetes, fun days and so on.

However, membership of Gretton NHW will be the main source of information regarding crime prevention, home safety and so on. There is absolutely no cost to membership and other than being vigilant (which doesn’t mean you’ll be net curtain twitching or being nosey), you are asked to absorb alerts and advice received by email and basically, being a good citizen of the Gretton community whilst ensuring your family, friends and neighbours are being kept safe.

Gretton NHW Alerts

Additionally, we have formed a NHW WhatsApp members’ group known as GrettonNHWAlerts. So, should some suspicious activity be seen, rogue traders selling door to door, a strange van cruising around and so on a group member can inform others very quickly to hopefully provide that extra degree of security and protection.

Neighbourhood Watch is an independent charitable organisation with over 2.6 million members in the UK. Schemes such as ours in Gretton are in many communities where members benefit from the information and alerts provided.

Incidentally, an added bonus of NHW membership is that when you inform your home insurance provider you are a registered member there could well be a discount on your premium.

One last thing. Though, as already stated NHW is independent we have the support of the Police. So, don’t forget! Should you have something suspicious or of concern to report call 101. ONLY dial 999 in a real emergency or if crime is being committed.
